5 Books On Public Speaking That You Should Definitely Read

My career journey can be described something like this:

A journey from being a stutterer to being a Public Speaking coach.

A journey from being nervous in front of my friends to addressing a crowd of thousands of people.

A journey from feeling shy and awkward all the time to creating hundreds of videos being a digital creator.

And this journey has not been an easy one!

But I was blessed enough to get support from a few of my loved ones. And yes, some of my loved ones were books!

Books have helped me learn the techniques to master the art of public speaking. After all, knowing the theory is as important as practicing.

I will be sharing the list of some of the books that have helped me become a better speaker. I hope these will prove to be beneficial for you as well.

(1) The Art of Public Speaking by Dale Carnegie

This book might be decades old, but it captures exceptional methods to attract the attention of a crowd towards your words.

This book has many concepts about confidence, positivity, and practicing constantly. Carnegie tells us how preparation and enthusiasm are imperative to make a message memorable.

Carnegie has also written another famous classic book classic How to Win Friends and Influence People

(2) Talk Like TED: The 9 Public-Speaking Secrets of the World’s Top Minds by Carmine Gallo

Want to speak like TEDx speakers?

The book is a treasure in itself as it has nine secrets of successful TED talks.

The secrets have been taken after going through thousands of TED presentations. Gallo has accumulated the best methods into nine simple public speaking steps anyone can master. According to the book, the recipe for an impactful TED talk is all about emotions, innovation, and being memorable.

(3) Out With It: How Stuttering Helped Me Find My Voice by Katherine Preston

I relate to this book a lot!

When I was in college, I used to be a stutterer. I have gone through several incidents in my life when my speech made me embarrassed. But, I did not stop working on myself! And, today I am a Public Speaking coach!

In this book too, Katherine herself had battled stuttering and met hundreds of stutterers, including celebrities, psychologists, writers, speech therapists, and researchers.

If they can overcome stuttering, you can too!

(4) Speak With No Fear by Mike Acker

Mike Acker’s strategies for becoming a more skillful, less anxious communicator are relevant whether you’re driving a four-person meeting or addressing a crowd of thousands.

He has elaborated 7 strategies that can help you master public speaking.

The strategy that I liked the best was: IMAGINE THE WORST

This method suggests imagining the worst that might happen in your upcoming speech or presentation. Then, prepare for it in advance.

Voila! Done!

(5) Speak like Churchill, stand like Lincoln by James C. Humes

Do you also wish to captivate your audience like Winston Churchill in his most memorable speeches?

Do you want to grab attention like the great speaker Abraham Lincoln?

If yes, then this book has unlocked the secrets of these great men. After all, Humes has written speeches for 5 American presidents!

Among all the concepts, I liked two particular concepts by him:

Power Poetry– this asks us to use internal rhymes, parallelism and alliteration in our speech.

Power Audacity– this asks us to surprise the audience with interesting anecdotes. In short, do the unexpected!

If you want to improve at any skill, you need to stop thinking and start doing it! Read books, get enrolled in courses, take the help of mentors! It’s never too late!

And most importantly, if I can, even YOU can! 🙂

Stay Awesome. Stay Productive.
