Methods of Speech Delivery

There are four primary methods of presenting a speech: manuscript, memorised, extemporaneous, and impromptu. Each has a variety of uses in various forms of communication.

So, while giving a farewell speech to your class or a presentation during a meeting, you need to be aware of the kind of delivery method you will adopt. Because speaking is not only about the message and the content, a lot depends on your speaking style as well.

A good speaker will always think about the delivery method or the way in which the speech will be communicated to the audience.

Depending on the audience, here are a few techniques you can use:

1) Manuscript Speaking

In manuscript speaking, the speaker writes down the entire message they will say during the speech. During the speech, the speaker refers to a page or any other visual aid.

Examples:

  • A televised news report as seen on television.
  • Reading out rules and regulations to the employees.
  • A President’s or Prime Minister’s address to the parliament.

Advantages:

  • It is an effective method when the speaker wants to convey vital information in less time.
  • It helps in maintaining a structure.
  • The speaker need not worry about the content of the speech.

Disadvantages:

  • The natural flow of the speaker is lost.
  • Eye contact might be affected due to reading from a paper.
  • It is an uninteresting way of presentation.

2) Memorised speaking

In memorised speaking, the speaker prepares the speech in advance by referring to notes.

Examples:

  • Most TED talks are memorised speeches.
  • Actors also use memorised speaking.

Advantages:

  • This method enables the speaker to maintain eye contact.
  • As there are no notes, the speaker can use hand gestures.

Disadvantages:

  • The speaker might get nervous and forget the memorised parts.
  • If all the vocal cues ( pitch, tone, volume, and pace) are not planned, the speech might become ineffective.

3) Extemporaneous speaking

In extemporaneous speaking, the speaker prepares and rehearses the entire speech with some brief notes.

Examples:

  • When an actor prepares the script once before the performance.
  • Debates sessions that are given at schools or universities.

Advantages:

  • The speaker can use a conversational tone.
  • The short notes help to remember the points.

Disadvantages:

  • The notes prepared might go out of order.
  • The speaker might forget the structure of the speech.

4) Impromptu speaking

In impromptu speaking, there is little or no preparation before the speech. The speaker might not even know that they have to speak.

Examples:

  • Interviews of politicians.
  • Panel discussion on the television.
  • Impromptu speaking is also used in interviews.

Advantages:

  • It is a thrilling experience for the speaker.

Disadvantages:

  • There is little to no time for preparation.
