3 Communication Skills Required for Your Career
When it comes to your career, not just your hard skills but also your soft skills play a crucial role.
If you want to advance in your career, you will require impeccable communication skills to inspire people around you.
Be it a CEO of an established company or a salesperson, they both need to communicate effectively in their respective fields. A CEO is expected to have good leadership skills, people management skills, and persuasion skills to name a few. And to master all such skills, there has to be a strong foundation of communication skills.
Now, let us take the example of the salesperson.
A salesperson is supposed to handle customers and persuade them to buy products or services. The salesperson is supposed to convert potential clients to paying customers. For doing this, a salesperson also requires persuasion skills, listening skills, etc. Again, the basis of this is developing strong communication skills.
Did you see it?
It does not matter which field you belong to, you will require communication skills for sure. Also, with the coming of a hybrid work environment, the importance of good communication skills is increasing day by day.
Below, I have listed five communication skills that you should master to become better at your work:
1) Active listening-
There is a very popular saying that goes something like this: ‘Don’t listen to respond, listen to understand.’
If you want to become a better communicator, then you have to listen before speaking. It is because communication is a two-way process. It is not just about saying what you want to say but also listening to what people around you want to communicate.
To become better listeners, you can practice active listening. Active listening means paying close attention to what others are saying and asking questions to show interest and understanding. This will help in building trust among the people you work with and it will also show that you respect your co-worker’s ideas.
2) Body language-
We communicate not only through our words but also through our body language. It is essential to demonstrate excellent body language, maintain eye contact, use hand gestures, and voice modulation while communicating with others.
A calm body posture with a friendly expression will assist in making you look approachable to others.
Eye contact also plays a crucial role in communication. If you can maintain eye contact while speaking, it shows you are confident and trustworthy.
3) Written communication-
Communication at the workplace also includes a major portion of written communication. Be it sending an email or having a conversation over WhatsApp, you should make sure that your message is not misunderstood by the receiver.
As most of the formal communication is still done through emails, it is important to master this skill to become successful at your workplace. It is vital to draft emails that are clear and concise. After all, you have to send emails even before you get hired!
These are a few of the communication skills that can impact your career growth to a great extent. Because the need of the hour is not just to have great ideas but also the ability to communicate the ideas to the world!
So do work on your communication skills!
Stay Awesome. Stay Productive.
